Im in the plans for upgrading my main computer to a Core 2 duo system and moving my current 3200+ AMD 64 out to my LCD-TV (to replace a older Dell system)

Before socket 939 chips completely disappears i will do a budget upgrade to the AMD.

Is there a preferred CPU for playing HD material such as x264, .ts streams and so on. Dualcore or high speed singlecores with loads of L2 cache (opterons)?

/Thomas

You might use the money to purchase a new video card instead:

Im not sure if these cards will decode x264 encoded material, only H.264?

x264 is not a codec, x264 is a free library for encoding H264/AVC video streams (http://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html).
HD contents are using either H.264, VC-1 or sometimes MPEG-2 HD codecs.
For H.264 you can upgrade your single core system with a radeon hd 2400 or 2600 or Geforce 8 8400 to 8600.
But for VC-1, only ATI has full support for decoding.
It is better to upgrade the video card than the cpu.

Ok, thanks! IŽll check the videocard option instead!

But just out of curiosity, X2 or a fast singlecore?

If you choose the right video card, a singlecore is enough, even a sempron 3400+...

Yepp i get that!

My question was, is there a preference when watching HD video, two cores or a fast single core with large L2 cache?

dual core is always better, but while watching your HD video you will see quite no difference, unless you look at cpu loads in task manager...

reply:
you could run a fast single core but the power of 2 cores will go further and that with a good video card will go even further. but even if your videocard isnt top notch the out come will still be better than a single core. and if the dual core isnt fast enough and you really dont wanna buy a more expensive one you could always got to over clocking. ive herd that daul cores overclock better than singles anyway so... do your self a favor and go with the dual.
