Great story about collecting. Collectors should be encouraged by this story. Very Happy
But I think coins and chips are two completely different thing at present time. Coin collecting is well accepted by the masses while chip is not now.

Another thing that do not serve chip collecting is that we don't have any idea of how many chip were manufactured in each models/families. So it's quite difficult to evaluate their values. Moreover and unfortunately, ebay can't be considered as objective when we speak about prices lol.

I believe it is exactly "at present time" Smile
I see several reasons of my hope:

1. Every chip has own history of creating(cloning Smile ), production, using.

2. Any child knows that CPU is the most important computer chip. It is easy to induce someone's chip collection interest.

3. We have a possibility to collect CPUs from very first pieces (yet).

4. If one of million start collect CPUs (I think it's really, Kiev has 3,5million and I know at least 10-12 collectors:) ) - we need a lot of vintage chips.
(Personally I reserved several hundreds common CPUs for them)

It doesnt matter if you are talking about coins, or some oil paint on canvas. Create a big enough story about something and you the generate desire to own.

But lets put this into perspective. The amazing prices reached by some items are for very specific reasons. They are either unique or a special arrangement.

Take for example Roman coins.. you would think they are all very rare and very expensive. This is not the case. Roman coins are very common and some prices are not at all expensive. You can buy coins made thousands of years ago for little money today.

Just because something is OLD it does not make it expensive or desireable. So think what you spend your money on!

Yes, that's definitly right.
As for spending money, I think there are several reasons that chip collecting deserv we spend money.
1) The first and most important is PASSION. Dual to lasting PASSION for chips, one would spend money to buy chips continuously.
2)The second reason, I would see POSSESSION. This belongs psycological category, It is generated by PASSION.
3)Investing reason. I am not sure but I think everyone have to invest its money to something in order to increate their value or at least keep their value under inflation. so, chip probablly be not a bad choice.

First of all, 2 and 3 are all based on 1.
