I want to add 2 additional Xeon MP's to my server. The chips in the server have the SL79Z on the existing chip. I see different prices for chips with these numbers. Are they the same?
I'm a cheapo because dell wants $3000 for a chip!!!!!
Any help would be appreciated. |

Yes, SL79Z is the same chip, all the way around. What I would do, though, is get one from the SAME Intel plant (Call and ask), the closer they are, the better you are off.
But, keep in mind, as long at the specs match, you're not bad off with unmatched s-spec... But when matching for MP use, it's always best to match as best as you can. |

RN80532KC0682M is a part number that specifies basic processor features. That part number may have multiple S-spec numbers - those specify processor features in greater detail (like core voltage, Thermal Design Power, CPUID, etc). In your case the RN80532KC0682M has only one S-spec number - SL79Z. In this sense they are the same. I hope this answers your question, although my feeling is that you wanted to know whether SL79Z from Dell is the same as SL79Z bought from other site. Yes, they are the same.

Hmm, OK. if the chips are the same why when I search for one do I see different prices based on brand name "HP, dell,...etc" for the SL79Z.
Secondly, any recomendations of vendors to use or avoid.
Many thanks |

This is how big companies make money - by selling their branded replacement parts at premium prices. Maybe some branded non-CPU replacement parts are of better quality than the parts from other vendors, but this doesn't apply to CPUs - they are all made by Intel, and they all have the same quality no matter who you buy it from.
