i have an old system taht id liek to get back going but im not sure what cpu to place in it
i have for this socket 7 mobo a 233mmx pentium and a cyrix mii 266gp
the cyrix runs on this mobo at 200mhz max and it supports mmx
both cpus are 66fsb
so which one is better?

oh i forgot to say also taht i put an amd k6-2 300 in it and it ran and booted at 200mhz with 66fsb and mmx
would this be better than the pent or cyr? or does the mobo need special chips to even use the amd? |

What is the bus speed for the Cyrix MII-266 chip you have? I didn't run tests with 66 MHz version of the chip, only with 83 MHz version. MII-266 (83 MHz) processor on my system was slower than AMD K6 233 and Pentium MMX 233.

Well, if your board supports Pentium MMX 233, then you should be able to run AMD K6-2 300 at 233 MHz. If you're interested in integer performance only I'd say go with AMD. Also, if you play 3DNow optimized games then AMD is the better choice than Pentium. If you do a lot of FP calculations then use the Pentium.

No, you don't need special chips. Usually motherboards need BIOS update to use faster AMD chips, but it seems to me your motherboard doesn't need BIOS update if it boots with the AMD chip.

I've got different results for MII-300GP for Sandra whetstone and manually compiled whetstone programs - in both cases the Cyrix CPU was the worst.
This reminds me I need to upload MII/6x86MX benchmark results to my site...

well i cant get any other cpu besides teh 233 intel to run at anything over 200mhz. the jumpers on the motherboard only support up to 200mhz but if i place the intel 233 in it will boot at 233mhz. and wcpuid reports this. from looking at teh mobo it doesnt look like a super 7. i think its jsut a normal socket 7, so i cant get over 66fsb. infact i was surprized that it even booted with the amd. the cyrix i have is 66fsb.
but if teh 233intel is better than teh cyrix i think ill jsut use that because i have a mobo taht i can use the amd with. |

oh yes and i forgot to add that when i ran a wcpuid it only showed support for mmx. it said 3dnow wasnt supported. this is why i asked if i needed a special chipset for the amd. the chipset is an intel.
here are the numbers located on what i think are the north and south bridges:

| ahh damn here i go again forgetting stuff.... yes i had the amd in when i ran wcpuid and it reported no 3dnow support. so i feel its a waste to have the amd in, but im still open to sugestions |

3DNow is just a set of extra processor instructions, they should be always there regardless of the motherboard and BIOS installed. Maybe wcpuid gets this info from the BIOS, and, as it's an old motherboard, the BIOS doesn't know about 3DNow. Anyway, because your motherboard doesn't run AMD chip at 233 MHz then in my opinion Pentium MMX 233 CPU is the best choice.
