I'll use the same O and X system as Qwerty:

I were judging them by basic condition look so I am not sure if it is correct or not

P.S.
If I win, please don't send me a dead Athlon Wink

the correct answer would have been

XX
OO
XX
OO
XX
OO
XX
OO
XX

the Athlon 1400 in the last row is working at up to 1200Mhz, the Duron in the last row is posting, not booting.

anybody has any idea which parts of the die don't affect the function if damaged?

Marcin is the winner with 10/16 (last row excluded)

All parts of the die are important.

Damaged edges of the silicon crystal will not affect the circuits on the die directly. The circuits lie at the bottom of the die between SI crystal and the chip's base.
Only if the die has cracks the circuits are destroyed.

If the die's edges are damaged the CPU will work for some time, but then will fail due to overheating.
The damaged edges don't have the contact with the headspreader! The circuits beneath such areas will overheat (and/or be destroyed) after a very short period of time.
The BIOS will not prevent the CPU from overheating because the average temperature of the die stays normal.

The booting of Windows 98 isn't a big challenge for a damaged chip.
If you install one of your CPUs with damaged die and run Prime95 on it, it will not survive the test Twisted Evil

tried one of them with my xp on scsi and prime(max temperature), tested for about half an hour without errors. temperature rising from 47 to 52°C and staying constant for 20min. to me the chip seems to be in a quite good (technical) condition. are there visible structures on the back of the die of those flip-chip packages (like on the dies under a lid)? or will there just be lots of tiny solder spots?(notice the golden spots on the right of the duron, intended to connect the additional cache of the athlon, i think).
does anybody have a pic of the classic athlon with descriptions for the areas? (couldnt find any on google) - getting on topic now.

noticed CPUID 0630 (A0) for AKBA isn't on the "Stepping codes of AMD K7 microprocessors" page
