Hi,

I have a AXDA2800DKV4D and want to upgrade. My mobo...

Code:
KM4M-V
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=589&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=

... supports up to 3000+ So is a AXDA3000DKV4D the fastest chip I can upgrade to and is it really worth it?

Thanks
John

The URL you provided answers part of your question. After all, it's the manufacturer's website and lists all the processors supported by the latest BIOS.

Do you have the BIOS version listed at the top of the 'Supported CPU' list?? If not, there is a button to click for a scan utility which will provide curent information on your set-up and the means to update.

As for the CPU upgrade, even if your BIOS will support the 3000+, the slight speed increase isn't worth the cost, IMO, unless the CPU is free or near free.

If the BIOS has the capability, a slight overclock could get you more of a performance increase than upgrading from a 2800+ to a 3000+ CPU.

What they list is only the officialy supported procs as far as I know, and wasn`t sure if there was a better 3000 like a sempron or something.. dunno I`m no expert.

That`s what I though, seen as the only differance between the two is an extra 85MHz... but you never know.

I ran an antique (1999 model) eMachines eTower 500is with a Celeron 500MHz processor and 256MB of PC133 RAM for years. I resisted the upgrade fever for a long time, but gave in last summer. Moving into the 21st century wasn't cheap, but it cost less than I would have thought. I built my own computer from scratch and have never regretted it. I bought a part or two per month and waited for sales/markdowns to keep from throwing my budget out of whack, and now have a set-up that runs rings around my old eMachines. Looking back, I wonder why I waited.

Yeah it needs a new mobo, ram, proc, heatsink, fan and graphics card if I can`t get onboard... already got a Corsair HX 520W and WD7500AAKS. Still, it`s a big upgrade though considering I don`t game. No doubt I`ll wish I hadn`t waited when I eventually upgrade like you did though.

I'm not a gamer either, but it's nice to have a computer that boots in a fraction of a minute, shuts down even faster, allows streaming video, multi-tasking, will run programs like Google Earth in the blink of an eye, and can download/install a 40 Meg file in seconds instead of HOURS.

Of course, part of this is having 6 Meg DSL service, but I got the high speed service while still running the old eMachines and saw little to no improvement until I built a computer to match.

By waiting for sales and researching prices, I was able to accomplish this while living on Social Security Disability income and a small pension, so my budget was tight to say the least. Every last part was bought online. I've had a computer for years and have NEVER set foot into a computer store. IMO, most are vultures waiting to swoop down and feast on a person's lack of knowledge by lying their way into your wallet.

Case in point: a local computer store told a friend (who drags her computer to them constantly) that her RAM was 'wearing out', convinced her she needed to buy more, and charged her $300 plus tax for the exact same RAM she could have bought online for $89 with free shipping. The new RAM did nothing for her problem.

I learned everything I needed to know to complete my build from asking questions on forums like this and about half-a-dozen others. There are some very experienced folks out there who will bend over backwards to help and share their experience. Cruising these forums is something I do atleast once a week and learn something everytime.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do with your 'puter. Cool
