I have an ASUS A7N266-C motherboard with 256 MB installed RAM.
I just wanted to upgrade to 1.25 GB, so I bought 2 DIMMs Kingston KVR266X64C25/512, CL2.5, PC2100, 2.5 volts, fully compliant with the system.

I installed the DIMMs as instructed in the manual, i.e. the 2 Kingston 512MB in slots DIMM1 and DIMM2 and the third one, a 256MB DIMM into the DIMM3 slot. The 3 DIMMs have a total of 5 banks as instructed by the MB manual.

I started the system, but there was only the alarm signal, indicating that no DIMMs were recognized. When I removed the DIMMs2 and 3, letting in only the DIMM1 the system started up, but the BIOS setup was launched with the CPU/PCI Frequency (MHz) in bold (the value stored was 100/33). On the right there was the following message: "During the last bootup, your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting.Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize the system performance and reliability, make sure the CPU speed conforms to the specifications of your CPU".

Conlclusion:The system works properly when the DIMM1 only slot is occupied (either with 256MB or 512 Mb chips).Otherwise it hungs, with the message above. Pls note that I have an AMD Athlon XP 1800 CPU. The system dates back to 2002.

Please provide me with necessary directions.
Thank you so much.

Have you tried it only with the new modules: ie, Dimm1 512Mb and Dimm2 512Mb?

So, the fsb could be set by ram?

256MB 1600 so 100 mhz+33 for cpu; 512 2100 so 133+33?

I guess some BIOS settings should be changed.

512+512 doesn't work then...

512+256, I think your sys'll hang.

Read the settings for cpu and ram frequencies for the bios (in your manual), see if you can put 133mhz for cpu (not with overclocking from 100) and auto for ram (setting it to the slowest ram stick frequency). XP 1800+ has a 133 mhs fsb.

MAybe updating your BIOS? easy stuff.

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

browse for your board and see if your bios is an older version than the ones on the site... maybe a simple upgrade to make it go...

I copy from my BIOS setup:

Current CPU Speed 1150MHz
CPU Speed Manual
CPU Frequency Multiple 11.5 x
CPU/PCI Frequency (MHz) 100:33
CPU/Memory Frequency ratio 1:1

The MB is in Jumperfree mode.Remind me what FSB stands for?
What do you suggest me to do with the above settings?

Your cpu should be 11.5x133.33= 1533.3 mhz, you are running your system slower than it could.

In the BIOS, there should be a setting for the Cpu frequency, you should adjust it from 100 to 133.

Look for that, if you have the manual read the BIOS settings chapters and look for cpu frequency.

More later.

OK, I set the CPU/PCI Bandwidth (MHz) from 100/33 to 133/33, so the CPU speed increased from 1150MHz to 1533MHz or so. Is that SAFE?

I also cleared the CMOS by pulling out the battery, changing the jumper and setting it again as previously, plugged in all the DIMMs and agin no luck. The system hung at startup. When I removed the DIMMs in slots2,3, the system started up, the BIOS setup was launched indicating Wrong CMOS checksum (or smth like that) and instructed that the default CMOS data should be loaded.I did so, exit BIOS, WIN was loaded normally. Any suggestions?Thanx anyways,I hav to say that!

Now your CPU works on stock speed = Athlon XP 1800+ (1,53 Ghz)

What is your bios version, at startup there should be a string reading 10XX.XX, indicating the version.

Maybe the chips aren't supported yet from your bios.
