|
|
I was wondering how it is possible for Intel to decreased the TDP for the 3.4GHz Prescott/90nm cored LGA775 P4 from 115W to 84W in the latest (E0) stepping?
I understand that a stepping involves a revision of the wafer mask and that this can solve any electrical issues etc. but that's a 25%+ drop in TDP.
I note the core voltage has dropped from 1.4V to 1.287-1.4V.
Is this is real drop or is it just Intel marketing?
Can anyone enlighten me? |

E0 stepping processors in LGA775 package have additional power management features. I have no idea what these features are, but it's possible these features reduced maximum power dissipation. Just compare E0 steppings for LGA775 and 478-pin packages - the difference is almost 20W.

I think D0 stepping information provided by the Processorfinder is not correct - both D0 and E0 stepping processors may have multiple voltages in the range 1.25V - 1.4V.

You're right about TDP - for some reason I assumed it's a power dissipation. I do think TDP is dependent on CPU power dissipation, just this dependency is not linear. For example, 2.8, 3.2 and 3.4 GHz E0/LGA775 P4 have TDP 84W, while 3.6 and 3.8 GHZ processors have TDP 115W.
