Hi people
I was just wondering what the Celeron D would perform like against 533FSB Northwood pentium 4s.
I ask this because my PC has a p4 2.66 northwood cpu with a 533FSB, and i'm thinking of upgrading the chip, anyway, i've got too much PC2700 ram to throw away to upgrade to an 800FSB prescott processor and PC3200 ram. i'm happy with my motherboard and everything else, so i'm stuck with socket 478 for now and so was intruiged by the Celeron D line of processors as they are prescott based. So it has twice as much L1 cache as my current p4 but half as much L2 cache, so i'm thinking it will need a very high clock speed to even consider using a Celeron D as an upgrade?? Surely twice as much L1 cache must help performce? Is it crippled though with only 256KB L2 cache, it does have an even further extended pipeline afterall? I remember the first (willamette?) p4's only had 256KB L2.
Ideally i'd like to get an old 3.06GHz HT p4 but they are so hard to find now (in the UK)!! So I'm thinking to consider a Celeron D over my p4 it would have to be a 340 or a 345.
Any advice would be helpful
Thanks in advance! |

Anandtech had an article about Doom 3 performance, and they tested a lot of AMD and Intel processors (direct link to results):

They don't have Celeron D 340 or 345 though, but I don't think they'll be faster than your processor (at least in Doom 3).
