It's difficult to tell. It looks good to me... or maybe too good. A couple of things I'm not sure about are:
- no space between the part number and the s-spec number;
- the markings are too good (too crisp) on the top of the chip. Look at the Mask work (M) and copyright (C) - the width of the lines is too thin, that is thinner than on other boxed Pentium processors.

Date on the back is 1997, date on the front is 1996.

A year apart is VERY unlikely.

I would say that its a fake.

In addition to the above...

- That font has never been used by Intel on Pentiums. Compare zeros for example. Intel Pentiums has always a strike through going diagonal across the zero.

- I have not seen ICOMP 1 used on a 166, only ICOMP 2 which should be 127.

yes, I do notice this. this is exactly what I think the most abnormal at first sight of it. but maybe it's out of the rule for datecode on HS ?

I think it would be better to draw a conclusion after we see what will be showed when removing the heatsink. Smile

I wouldn't remove that heatsink, it was part of the original retail package.

In this circumstance i would think its nessesary to remove it to see if in fact its a fake or genuine. If its fake then certainly nothing lost, but if its genuine, still nothing really lost, i am sure if someone wanted this chip they would take it with or without the heatsink on.

I would first (as always Smile ) check the CPUID and see if it fits with what is known for either date.
