Hellow to all, I am newbie here.
I am going to build workstation for 3D modeling, animation, and rendering. Which platform is better to go with? I am also play some games sometimes.

1 Two Xeon's E5410 2.33GHz, 4x1GB DDR2 800MHz, Video GeForce9800GX2/NvidiaQuadroFX1700, etc.

2 Core 2 Extreme QX9650 3GHz, 2x2GB DDR3 1333MHz, Video GeForce9800GX2/NvidiaQuadroFX1700, etc.

Thanks beforehand

Go for the QX9650.

Xeons are not worth the extra $$ unless you need 771.

Quadro FX isnt worth the extra $$$.

DDR3 isnt worth the extra $$$.

Stick with 2x2GB Config, with DDR2 to match the FSB speed (IE 400MHz, i'm guessing.)

Best bet:
QX9650 @4GHz with FSB 1600 ot 2000 (If you dare!)
DDR2-800 (or 1000) Sync with FSB dual-channel

I think Wizzard1 is right. I'd go for at least DDR2 1066 RAM, depending on the motherboard & CPU's FSB. 4GB (2 x 2GB) of RAM sounds good unless you run Vista, then I'd suggest twice that much as a minimum.

Check out an Nvidia 9800GTX/GTX+/GX2 or an ATI 4850 X2/4870 X2 video card.

Thanks very much for the answers, can ask more?

Is good board for 3D to check, Intel Sculltrail, or it is not worth the money/speed ?

If you have the money to spend, by all means go for it. This test might be of interest to you:

But for rendering a 8-cores (dual xeon) are much better than a single 4-core even if it's oc to 4Ghz ... (and here in Italy a Xeon 5410 cost 229 Euro while a QX9650 costs 840 Euro), of course mobo and ram for Xeon (they use FB-Dimm NOT DDR2/DDR3) cost much that the ones for "normal" Core 2 Quad

The Skulltrail is a dual Socket 771 board, so the QX9650 (Socket 775) won't fit anyway.

FBDIMMs are very expensive Very Happy Thats why I strayed from the Xeons, as well as the cost of the Xeons.

Thanks very much for the answers. I really will go for Xeon or Core 2 Quad, if it something from thees two will be better for rendereing, and I am not interesting in overall fast computer, because the most time I spend on renderings Smile

If it's really just going to be for rendering, you may very well want to consider dual Xeons.

Check with the guys over at www.2cpu.com forums. They know the dual Xeon stuff like the back of their hand Very Happy
