I have resurrected an old ASUS mobo with an Athlon cpu - the cpu board is brown and says it is an AXDC2400DKV3C chip BUT the BIOS and CPUdetector program say it is an AX1800DMT3C...which is right? The BIOS is Awardv6.00PG...could it be I need to upgrade the BIOS because it doesn't have info on the AXDC so just lists it as AX1800? Or have I been sold a bum chip?

Either of your proposed explanations is possible, but it is more likely that you need to upgrade the BIOS.

Before you upgrade BIOS, check in the current BIOS setup to determine if you can set the system bus to 133 MHz (266 FSB). Right now it runs at 100 MHz, which is why the cpu detects as AX1800.

Math:
AXDC2400 normal speed
133 MHz x15 = 2000 MHz

AXDC2400 at 100 MHz
100 MHz x 15 = 1500 MHz

AX1800 normal speed
133 MHz x11.5 = 1533 MHz
