People have died due to this. I get mad when I get a fake chip, but thats pretty small compared to the ramifications of this.

In the PC world, the consumer is partly responsible for fakes. Always wanting cheaper and cheaper.
This is an interesting article about the infamous fake cache back in the 486/Pentium days

erm.. sorry I cant agree with that. There is no reason to supply fakes other than to scam people. The suppliers of these fake/re-branded parts are simply crooks wanting your cash.

That is a world apart from making a crappy laptop with underperforming cpu, mobo design and 20 min battery life for $100.

Sadly price is no indicator of quality or performance, other than to play on expectations of the purchaser. I really wish I had studied psychology instead of electronics at university, so I am going to resort to armchair brain analysis. Just the other day I saw a brochure for £89 GBP AC power cord that was "oxygen free" and claimed to make your HIFI sound better. Now clearly to me that is bullshit, as I have the education to know otherwise. It would perform no better than a £1 GBP cord.

So.. be it cheap or expensive, playing on expectations is sailing close to the wind when it comes to morals.. but it is not PLAIN STEALING, which is effectively what the suppliers are fake parts are doing. Note here, fakes include, but are not limited to:

- blank parts, yup, no die. Just the legs into nothing.
- random remarked parts that have the same package/footprint, yes, this is insane. I have had this happen to me more than once.
- clones, not as common, but happens. Parts dont meet the full specs of the original. Problems typically only arise when you are 3000ft up the side of a glacier and your electronics stops working.

.. I could go on but I am boring myself already. Google for more insanity on the Fake market. Note, not the grey market, which are simply original parts distributed through unofficial channels.

To me faking mil-spec parts is the worst of this and almost as bad are those that deal and sell them.
