If any of you are thinking about hosting your collection online, get in touch with me and I can help you out. I manage a couple sites and we now have some excess capacity after going through a massive upgrade onto some awesome dedicated servers. The price for hosting is cheap, send me a PM and we can work out the details.
For those of you that dont know, getting a site online falls into two key steps.
The first step is to go register your domain name.. go to a registrar, I like http://www.joker.com . Pick a name, you may have to be creative in choosing a name as most are taken. Purchase the extension you want, net, .com etc.. and then register it. Take time on this step, as once you have done it, it can be a pain to change. Avoid stupid names, the novelty wears off fast. The important bit about registering the name yourself is that you will then have FULL control over where that site can be hosted. (more on this in a second)
The second step is to find a provider to host your website. Basically, their key job is to provide the hardware that holds the pages for you. There is a MASSIVE amount of choice out there. Go with what catches your eye, but be aware that the cheap deals are on a shared hosting environment, that means your site has to fight for cpu time with literally thousands of other sites. The dedicated servers we have hold no more than a handful of sites each, so nice and fast - and reliable.
The following is the typical setup we have, and is good enough for all but the most intense ecommerce site.
* 10GB of disk space, if you want a little more then no extra charge
* Unmetered data transfer / bandwidth per month - within reason. They are my servers, so I can set the bandwith, but if you suck the life out of it, then I will throttle you back.
* Unlimited email forwarding mail@yourdomain.com
* Auto responders for email addresses, ideal for telling people when you are away...
* POP3/Webmail - unlimited mail quota.
* Control Panel, fully functional.
* Email is filtered for Spam and Viruses
* Unlimited subdomains of your domain name
e.g. http://subdomain.yourdomain.com/
* CGI-BIN directory
* Perl,PHP 5, SSI (server side includes) etc..
* Unlimited MySQL Database
* phpMyAdmin for MySQL management
* Full FTP access
* Detailed visitor statistics
* Fast email 24/7 support, telephone support if you really need it.
* Off-site backups
* Secure servers on fast datalines.
Avoid going for "complete all in one packages", these are the ones that register your site and give you web hosting. You see these going really cheaply. They tend to make it difficult to move hosts and also you feel obliged to stay with them. Always register your domain name yourself, and then go pick your hosting.
The final stage of step two, is to get your data online. I really like Wordpress. Some people use it as a Blogging platform, others use it as a content management system. Whatever you choose.. getting yoursite online is far easier now than it used to be. Host what you want, (the only rules are no porn or spam ), other than that nobody cares what you host, be it a picture of your cat, or 50 thousand pictures of CPU. The rules are monitored by traffic tools that throw up an alert.
Drop me a PM if you are interested in some cheap webspace. The price for the package above is $5 USD a month, or $50 a year. (ya, it is a good deal) The standard price we charge is double that for that package, but I want to make it available to fellow collectors. So save your money for cpu, not web hosting.
Send me a PM if you have any questions or if you want to buy. |
