That doesn't seem too bad a price really, since it probably is considered custom "one-off" work. I wish there was some way to "homebrew solderstation" at home. I'd probably be killing stuff left and right, but at least it would be creative...

I mean... who wouldn't want to try and make a DDR dimm using old video card memory. Sure it's only a 64mb DIMM, but the memory is rated for 300+mhz right? Sure CAS 5 sucks but.. Laughing

But yea, do post how it comes out, good or bad! Even if nobody else is interested, just seeing the equipment and attempts is awesome to me.

If/when you get your rework arts perfected. Just.. wow. You could so be a hero for retro-hardware people. I keep thinking things like "hey, now my Slot A Athlon Classic can have faster cache, 1:1" etc.

Exclamation And how slow of me, I just realized. SGI... took me long enough eh? icon_bong

Just sent the parts of to the guy that is going to do the socket install for me.

I admire you for keeping your trusty old hardware going and taking on this project. There were a couple of custom 1Ghz socketed MMC2s on eBay 2 years ago for $150 each but they had some minor problems you can read about at forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=71095

I wonder if you could upgrade the cheaper P2 MMC2s with a 1Ghz BGA?

Thanks Chromedia for the link, interesting. Here I though I was the only one trying this!

Got a bunch of older stuff laying around and like to mod/upgrade as much as I can.

The module is out and when it returns and is working I will update the post.

Looking forward to your update.

Re: my question about the PII mmc2 : short answer is they're not upgradeable because the mmc2 750mhz and above have bigger capacitors that a 1ghz chip would need.
