I just learned I have a D4040 that is a remarked IC. What are the details about remarked chips? Are these more or less rare. What was the first remarked IC? Do they only occur on ceramic ICs? Do most manufacturers remark? Does this mean my collection is going to explode even further trying to acquire these?http://66.246.56.244/forum/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif

Thanks in advance! Norm

Usually remarked chips are much more rare than standard chips - of course, if they are not fake chips. I guess this applies to almost any type of collection - if collectable item has some rare kind of defect introduced by original manufacturer of the item then this defect makes it more desirable for any collector Smile As an example this 4004 processor with upside-down printing in my opinion is worth more than another INS4004D CPU with normal printing:

All types of packages can be remarked - for example I have a couple of remarked plastic DIP chips.

I think your collection won't explode because remarked chips are very rare. For example, the number of remarked chips in my collection is very small - probably less than 10. I don't see a lot of remarked chips in other collections as well.

By the way, can you post a picture of the processor?

Here's the images of the standard Intel D4040 and the remarked version. The remarked version appears to have a somewhat crudely black painted top with the intel chip imprinting. You can see streaks in the paint as if it was painted using an artist brush. The bottom of the chip is identical to the non-remarked chip. Yes it could be a fake, but it came from a chip tube with the non-remarked D4040 shown in this image. Comments????

Hold the IC through UV-light. You will see the old printing appear. I think these are fake chips. There are a lot faked P4004 around...

They could be fake, but I trust the guy who sold it to me. He sells normal Intel D4040 processors on eBay, and he mentioned he has more remarked D4040 processors. His user id on Ebay is showit.
