Have you used it ? I would like to hear opinions. To this moment I have used AVG 9.0 Free Edition at home PCs. _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Never used it.
I always use Avira Antivir Free, uses less ram than AVG does and less advertising crap (except for the popup you get everytime it updates). |

Topic is about "M$ Security Essentials" but I must ask you Leevmeister about pendrive virus detection by Avira. How it looks like with autorun.ini and other crap ? Kaspersky which I have use at work and AVG recognized them and removing well. _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Good question, but i don't know the answer to it myself, because i never got a autorun virus on a pendrive.
I can remember some time i put some kind of a program on a flash drive for retreiving computer information on the flashdrive, and antivir gave me a warning that there was a autorun on the usb disk, although it wanted it to autorun (you could say that it was some kind of virus but it wasn't a real one ) |

Hi,
I used to have AVG 8. I switched to MSSE just when it was released because I was fed up with AVG which was not so effective and sometimes annoying (slowing down the machine especially)
I'm very happy with MSSE which is all I expect from an antivir : efficient and as stealth as possible (I hate the "Norton syndrom" and antivir that are so omnipresent that it makes your 3 GHz quad core behave like a 486 !). Almost no false positive, and it detected virus not seen by AVG (on my PC @ work) : not a big proof, but...
In addition, it includes MS antispyware (Windows defender). So no need for 2 separate softwares.

OMG change it for your security as quick as possible I have been shocked how many viruses Avast didn't recognized after changing it.
@q0b Thanks for your comment. I want to try it when Kaspersky's license will be outdated - especially if that is still free for comercial use ! _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

I've been using it for several months on my own and my customers machines without any problems.
Lower "overhead", overall system performance is much better than using AVG or Avast. And one would think MS should know best how to protect their system. _________________ The two most common elements on Earth are oxygen and stupidity. |

That is the main mistake.
They do NOT know how many holes they have.
(if they know than why they make them?)
AVG is best (free) solution for protection... He slow down the whole machine but this is the only way to keep the holes closed.
The trade could be; Use AVG but there are no need to use them all the time. If you think that something is wrong (or from time to time...) install, check your system... and than uninstall them.
Doing that way, and if you have at least basic experience... everything should be fine. |

I think MS unfairly get a lot of criticism. All software has holes/weaknesses, but if you're a hacker you go after the one with the biggest audience. A security consultant the other day compared MS operating systems with Mac OS X and said MS was like having a house with barred windows and doors in the worst suburb in town, while OS X was like having a open barn out in the country. Interesting analogies. _________________ My former Intel collection:

I agree on Norton - drives me nuts with the amount of resources it takes, plus it feels like it is owning your PC and telling you what you can/can't do. Too obtrusive |

It would be interesting to hear what he have to say about UNIX/Linux.
BTW. Most of the time I am on windows (XP) too, not because this is my choice but because I need to stay compatible with... majority. |

I have run MS Security essentials for some time on several computers.
Have had NO problems, sits in the background and does its things, no hassle, no bloat, just works. _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

in regards Autorun viruses from mobile storage...
--> why not disable autorun in windows? plain and simple, a couple of clicks.
I have used for a very long time F-PROT untill they have changed core kernel and closed support for pre 6 version. Now i am using avira premium, so far so good, installing avira free on all friends pcs if they ask to what to use. Did AVG for some time, but stopped about a few months ago, due to "viral accident" it did not catch virus, so i have found an alternative that would detect it.
norton/mcafee and similar - are way too resourse hungry and complicated for regular home user.
Use bit defender/panda/house call for online scanning -they detect most of krap you may or may not want on your pc, but most of the time requires manual work, which is not a problem at all for me.
Aas of viruses- the nastier i have had in recent years is one that embeds itself in ALL EXE-ecs and when you remove virus, you will remove all your execs... bastard took out my 10 year old software collection. _________________ its here. |
