Hi
This is a great forum and has helped me a lot already just 2 questions.
1. I have a AMD-K7900MNR53B A processor on GA-71xe motherboard, is it possible to upgrade this CPU on this motherboard ? and if so to what ? I am currently running Windows 98se and I'm just about to increase the RAM frpm 128MB to 756MB, as it freezes a hell of a lot.
2. If I can't upgrade, then I would like to replace the system and the cooling fans, which are extremely noisy and are attached to this socket A processor, can someone recommend an almost silent version of these fans ? Also I am a novice, so should I try to install it myself or take it to a professional ?
Thx

The fastest Athlon Slot A processors are 1 GHz AMD-K7100MNR53B A (model 2 with 512 KB cache) and AMD-A1000MMR24B A (Thunderbird with 256 KB on-die cache). Even if your motherboard supports them you'll get only about 10% increase in speed. In my opinion it's not worth it, especially if you take into accout very high prices on 1 GHz Slot A processors. You can probably get new Socket A motherboard with Athlon XP processor for the price of 1 GHz Slot A Athlon. So, in my opinion, the best upgrade path for you is to replace both motherboard and processor.
Thank you!

i agree, not to mention the increases in speed from a faster, more up to date processor (sse and such), the benefits of a newer motherboard chipset (sata, fw, usb2), etc... it would end up being slightly cheaper, the same, or slightly more, but giving you far more performance and benefits imo |
