Hi,
I have an AMD Turion MK-36 and would like to know what options I have to upgrade it please? I'm new to AMD.

Many thanks

It depends on what the notebook manufacturer supports in the BIOS, so an accurate answer depends on your specific notebook model.

The MK-36 is a 90nm revision F2 (Richmond) part. I would guess that a Turion 64 X2 revision F2 (Taylor and Trinidad) dual core part would be compatible. The model numbers are TL-50 up to TL-64. Note that you need to know the part number also - it must end in "CT", which indicates revision F2.

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 9300 which currently has bios v.1.14. I had attempted to update to bios v.1.20 but it turned out that Acer removed the support for 4gb RAM without informing anyone. Happy to update to v.1.17 if necessary.

According to this page, the part number doesn't end in CT but CM:

TMDMK36HAX4CM

Is this correct and does this help in identifying what I may be able to upgrade to?
Many thanks.

OK, the Acer website mentions TL-50 is supported, so it is likely the other Athlon 64 X2 TL- processors are also.

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/0000/Acer/Aspire9300/Aspire9300sp2.shtml

single core revision F2 parts end in CM
dual core revision F2 parts end in CT

They don't indicate what's going on with their BIOS updates, so you would need to contact them to find out if it is necessary to support dual core.

Great, thank you for finding that page, I had looked but wasn't sure what terminology to use, lol.

So my options are basically a TL-50 which will definitely work or up to TL-64 which wil more than likely work Smile

I'll start looking.

Many thanks

Think I've found a couple of good candidates already:

Would someone more knowledgable than myself kindly confirm my choice of CPU upgrade is compatible before I go ahead and make the purchase please?

This CPU for Acer Aspire 9300 with v.1.9 BIOS

(ultimate responsibility is my own of course! Smile)

Many thanks

TL-60 should work if TL-50 works. It may run a bit hotter than your current processor.
