SGINERDS newest project. Socket 479m questions Getac A770

Got another Getac laptop to tinker on. Its a A770 with a Pentium M 1.6Ghz
sitting in a Socket So this opens up the possibilities to upgrade.

My question is this.

The Pentium M cpu is type SL6FA and this shows its a socket 478m but
it is in a 479m socket. I have a few Core-Duo cpus that also fit the
socket but the pins in the corner are arranged differently. And from
experience "Just because it fits doesn't mean it will not go up in smoke"

This being a Getac and not having any type of info on motherboard specs
it is a question I hope someone here can answer.

I want to put the fastest cpu in this laptop.

The chipset in this laptop is 855GME. Intel shows Pentium M 745 as the fastest CPU for the chipset. If the 745 works in the motherboard, then I 'd think that Pentium M 765 would work too.

Core Duo won't work in this motherboard.

Got a reply from the tech dept. at Getac. Short and sweet " the 1.6Ghz is the
fastest cpu offered" I figured as much!

Its always like that when working on stuff that is not really intended for the
general public.

Did a bit of searching and am thinking about trying a 533FSB cpu in the socket to see if the MB will take it. Then I can go shopping for a Pentium M 770 2.13Ghz

I don't see the big benefit of stepping up to 2Ghz and dropping down the L2 cache. The 770 has 2mb cache compared to the 1mb thats on the board now. Plus half a GHZ more so that will be a noticeable upgrade.

Also on the list is an SSD, my first but I here they are the cats meow and speed things up abit.

When I get a spare minute or two I will post a link to some pics.

Got the cpu stuff worked out and when it comes in the mail that part is finished.

The next thing I want to do is get rid of the 44-pin ide harddrive and step-up
to something faster. This Getac has the optional base that can hold 2 PCI cards so that opens up some options. I am thinking along the lines of a SATA card to a couple drives or USB 3 via the PCI or the PCMCIA slot.

Any ideas are welcome. I have these slots and ports available.

PCMCIA
Mini PCI
2x full size ( desktop type ) PCI
Firewire

The idea is to get the fastest transfer rates possible with what I have to work with. If I am overlooking a possibilty let me know.

I have Getac M220, but cpu is soldered in, was also thinking about upgrading it untill opened it up.

You could send it out and have it swaped by someone with a BGA station.
I am working on some MMC2 modules now. Adding sockets to allow for a
1Ghz cpu. Check my other posts for info. The swap costs me about 75-90
euro's a piece.

i have done BGA rework myself, but sold my IR station recently due to economical standpoint - costs reduction and personal time increase

Please help!!!! I just got my hands on a getac m220. I need a hard drive caddy(most importantly). Anyone know of where I might find other parts as well?
