This looks like a standard AMD K6-300AFR with ink printing. Except for two things:
1. copyright 1998. All of the K6 that I have seen are copyright 1997. Have you seen any 1998?
2. package #26050, which is usually only seen with early K6-2.
The processor does not boot at 300 MHz, but with a lower clock multiplier, it boots at 266 MHz.
Surprise! It identifies as K6-2. All of the following are consistent with K6-2 and not K6:
1. CPUID=580
2. supports 3DNow! instruction set
3. supports SYSCALL/SYSRET instructions
I doubt that it is a fake - why mark a K6-2 as a K6? How did this happen? |

what speed is engraved in the top right corner on the ceramic? _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

| maybe there was a time when low MHz K6-2 cost less than the fastest K6. That seems possible.

I have to check, but don't most K6/300s have an I/O voltage of 3.45
EDIT >> had a look around.. can find both 3.3 & 3.45V on K6/300AFR _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

I recently received another of these processors from CPU Shack, and discovered that it functions normally at 3x 100 MHz, just like a K6-2/300. There is also another one in this online collection:
http://www.oldcpu.cz/CPU/AMD/K6/amd-k6-300-afr-black/129
So I went searching for more information, and then wrote an article to explain my findings. Let me know if it makes sense, if you agree/disagree, if I have defiled the English language, and so on.

| My hypothesis is that this type of K6 is not fake. It is a K6-2 that has been remarked to a K6, probably to meet market demand for 66 MHz bus processors. |

It should be possible to decode the datamatrix code, and see if the decoded text matches the part number. If you have a high resolution picture I could try to do that.

I had forgotten about the datamatrix codes. How do they work if there is no serial number? Here are the 2 datamatrices from 2 different specimens:

Steve, they seem to be enlarged, so I doubt that a datamatrix reading program, that I have, will properly decode it. I was hoping for higher resolution picture.

Gennadiy,
I tried again, and uploaded them above. Let me know if they are useable. |
