Early 80386 processors didn't work correctly in 32-bit protected mode. Under certain conditions (enabled paging + lot of FPU activity) the system would lock (or crash???). Intel retested many processors and marked bug-free processors with double sigma, and buggy processors with "16-bit S/W only".
