Opteron's memory controller imposes limits on the maximum amount of physical memory. This usually is <number of channels> x <max number of RAM sticks per channel> x <max stick size>. Opteron datasheet has this data:
Package AM2+: Supports up to four (4) unbuffered DIMMs
Package AM3: Supports up to four (4) unbuffered DIMMs
Packages Fr2 (1207), Fr5 (1207), and Fr6 (1207): Supports up to eight ( registered DIMMs
Package C32: Supports up to six (6) registered DIMMs or up to four (4) unbuffered DIMMs
Package G34: Supports up to twelve (12) registered DIMMs or up to eight ( unbuffered DIMMs

These RAM stick quantities already take into account the number of memory channels.
