I just came across this revealing news about the threat of web censorship in Australia on WikiLeak.Shocked

I hope it doesn't happen to our member friends...

Yeah been on the cards for a while. Stupid, gutless politicians pandering to minority groups...but then it will be in their interest to block anything that doesn't fit with their policies/own beliefs. Hold on...they said it won't be abused, so it'll be alright (trust me, I'm a politician lol)

Problem with these kinds of laws is, even though they may actually not abuse it, 4 years later another political party may be in power who interpret those laws differently.

I see the same trend happening in the EU as well, particularly internet privacy. Guess we really need more 'internet protection'...hahaha! ¿?¿

At least the list is from government and by government of your country. Here in Czech Republic it's worse. Recently all 3 mobile providers started to censor internet access using private blacklist managed by private company IWF from the UK. Now that's something.

The reasons are mainly backed by protecting people from child pornography which (of course) doesn't work 100%. By hiding crime you won't get rid of it and those who want to find it know how to circumvent it anyway, so the one beaten is again average user. This is only one example and it's topic of Pirate Parties all over the world.

Internet is last bastion of real freedom so it's indeed prime target of various powerfull people, see the map how far they went: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship The sad part is that's not bad enough to corcern enough people to go and do something about it, Pirates are getting less than 1% in elections (save the two Swedish ones in Europarliament)

Good news...our Government just announced they are putting the filter on the backburner for at least a year while they do a more detailed review. Yippee...common sense (or public pressure) has prevailed

Good thing

The internet scares the govt a lot. They do not like the free exchange of ideas and information.

I prefer my govt to be afraid. Helps keep them straight (if at all possible)
