What's the difference between analog D-sub, vga and DVI? I am planning on buying a monitor and it says it supports Analog D-sub and DVI but I think I have a VGA connector and my monitor is a Compaq MV540 if that helps... Please help I am confused!

D-sub = vga and that is analog

DVI has multiple variants:

DVI-A = analog only, same as vga just a different connector

DVI-I = analog AND/OR digital. If your graphics card supports this interface the best mode is automatically chosen. This interface also allows the well known DVI to VGA adapters. Can also be converted to HDMI

DVI-D = Only digital. it is not possible to use analog signals on this type of connector. Can also be converted to HDMI

Now back to your problem: It will work, as I said above D-SUB = VGA = analog.

D-Sub is the standard, analogue connector. Being analog it may cause some distortion in the screen even by using a poor quality connection alone. On cheaper LCD screens using D-Sub with a non-default screen resolution sometimes results in even worse distortion.
DVI-D is the digital connector. Using a poor or long DVI cable doesn't distort the screen, it also doesn't need manual centring.
Simply put - DVI is digital and gives clearer screen, D-Sub is analogue and has its flaws, but you can find it in any graphics cars (well, some through a DVI-DSub converter) and in any monitor.
