Hi guys,

I'm doing a bit of research on Z80 internals and was looking for some nice hi-res die images. Unfortunately, it seems that there's not much on the net -- found one pic, but the quality is not that high, can't even read Zilog's logo.

So the request is -- can anyone share the images?
Thanks in advance!

It would have been a pleasure to make such a shot, but unfortunatly, I have no Z80 handy (especially one that can be opened easily, since they are most of the time in plastic packages...)

Thanks for the replies!

Okay, here is some new info: found die image for T34VM1! Here it is: http://cpu-ukraine.com/UserFiles/Image/MACRO2-/t34.jpg
Maybe it is worth to attach those two images to the corresponding sections of the site?

Okay Smile
I just made some macro experiments and temporary put some images to my site cpu-ukraine.com

Probably one day it will be an article like "eastern Z80 clones research".

I have two chips: T34BM1 and 80A-CPU (the second one is - russians just used W.German U880 crystal). Added 80A-CPU image to the macro-2 below T34 http://cpu-ukraine.com/article/16.html

If you need better resolution PM me your email.
If you need the best resolution... - contact g0b. I can send him my opened chips if he would scan them for you(us) Smile

just look:

iguana_kiev, this is just great! the problem is though that metal-1 layer cannot be seen in any way. did you try to remove the chip from package with hot air fan? it should be pretty easy to do. the point is to let the light through the silicon.

g0b, do you mind doing some photo sessions? Smile the public asks for hi-res silicon strip-tease. Very Happy but seriously, the higher the resolution, the easier is the work.

AFAIK, it's not possible to take pictures of a die by transparency (lighting through the die). The metallic layers makes it opaque.

What i've tried, though, is polarized episcopic lighting (instead of LED diascopic lighting) . This might emphazise some details of interest. Here is the difference :

Upper image is lighted @ 45 degrees by a LED ring ("classic" picture). Lower image is exactly the same subject lighted along the optical axis by polarized light

To make choice even harder, it's possible to use both lighting at the same time. It gives this :

yep, polarized light definitely gives more detail and enhanced contrast. but it also gives uneven illumination -- you can see the light spot in the lower part of the image. it will present a problem if you try to stitch a set of images together.

i've tried to correct this in photoshop to a limited success, but you still can see that bright spot. maybe if it was a raw image it could be helped...
