Hi,

I was given a couple of AMD ZS2308WAL4BGH to upgrade a dual AMD 2214 HE system (arima/rioworks nm46x mb) to quad core, but they do not work. it seems its an odd part# or maybe an engineering sample???

Any ideas what it is?

Lastly, what would be my best bang-for-a-buck quad core upgrade from a 2214 HE?

TIA,

Bill

Bill,

Welcome. That indeed appears to be an Opteron engineering sample, and very likely a quad core Barcelona.

It should be compatible with your Arima NM46x. You may need to update the BIOS to get quad core support, however. I believe the motherboard will support Barcelona, but not Shanghai quad cores.

Thus you should be able to run from Opteron 2344 (1.7 GHz) for higher effieciency up to 2360 (2.5 GHz) for higher performance. Best bang for the buck is typically somewhere in the middle, like a 2354.
