Hi Peter,
While this item isn't as rare as a Norden Bomb-sight or Enigma Machine, it's still a high quality piece of vintage engineering, so if it was mine, I would keep it free of dust by keeping the cover on it unless you were showing it to someone.
You never know--this might be a museum piece someday! Surprised

find a suitable glass bulb, maybe somebody has a worthless tube for that ourpose?

haha

actually, glass domes as used to house small stuffed birds, can be found from time to time.
