I have a PC with a 450 mhz Intel (Katmai) CPU and would like to swap to the fastest interchangeable CPU using the same mobo.

Can I use a Coppermine Chip? Or what should I look out for.

Just using this machine while I build a new machine based on an SLI board with new technology Embarassed

The Board is a Compaq Board. Can't see a screen printed board number or any description other than the fact that is titled a Compaq Pentium 2 System Board.

There is a paper sticker on the board with the following:
P1BOBAD9EIGR81 - Assembled in Mexico.

Don't know if thats any help.

Interrogating the system gives me a message that the current CPU is a 455mhz Intel (Katmai) P3

Hope this helps

What model of Compaq PC do you have ?

I can't find any information about your motherboard.

The only safe bet is a katmai 600MHz P3 with 100MHz FSB. If you're really unlucky, your motherboard may not be VRM8.4 compatible, which is necessary for coppermine processors.

I have a small Form factor Compaq Deskpro - no other id other than Intel P3 label on the case. Inside the case is a paper label with System Board SW1 settings running from 300mhz - 400mhx (66mhz Bus) and 350-500 (100mhz Bus). The label has a number 314242-007 which I thought might be a Compaq part number but a Google has not thrown anything up.

If I can't be sure of using a Coppermine then I would probably be happy with the 600 CPU. Not a great problem as the machine will eventually be replaced.

Just started looking and seem to have got a bit wrapped up in the subject so wanted to find out more.

Thanks for all your help so far

Things have come a long way since I built my first 8088 PC from a bundle of bits bought from Hong Kong. Should have kept current Sad

If your motherboard supports 400 MHz at 66 MHz bus speed then it has 6x multiplier, which means it should support 600 (6 x 100) processor. I'd say go for Katmai 600.
