All that being said, the 2 best options are:

Laptop (if the power doesnt go off for more then an hour or so)

UPS backed by generator.
There are some nice, fairly quiet models in the 1-2kw range that would work fine. Run through the UPS to deal with any odd voltage sags etc (Some UPSs and even generators have line conditioners even)

Yup. I agree 100%.

How is this:
Laptop backed up by UPS backed up by generator (optionally) Cool
(I still cannot chum up with that smelly, spendy and annoying generator...)
Standard laptops consume only ~ 20-40W, I guess you
do not need a gaming configuration...... like the cute Toshiba
Qosimo X500-13R with its 180 Watts peak Shocked
HAHA, it just came into my mind, run your (new) laptop with some
truck cells (24Volts with a small step-down converter to get
the 19V or whatever) for years and charge them manually
(if ever needed).... Smile
There are also small PSUs for 12V (6-24V?) input like the PicoPSU
which should make your "standard"-PC happy. So get a truck or car
battery and a special PSU! Connect the charger with a timer.
Or tinker something together that will load the battery automatically
when the voltage is down.

my laptop is 240W (HP dv8t)

And max said he is doing computational work, so thats going to drain the battery faster, he best have a good UPS and generator depending on how long the power goes out.

I was going to leave you in your ignorance, but seeing as you asked.

You were clearly ignorant in your earlier posts and you continue to display a lack of understanding in what I was talking about.

Can't accept that I called you out for that stupid idea of hooking up an inverter and trailing the lead into the house huh?

I call it as I see it, and straight talking is what you get from me. If you want someone to hold your hand and pat your head while explaining why you are talking out of your ass then I am not that guy.

JAC.......I am not sure if you are on drugs......or if you need to be on drugs, but I think you need a time out.You have turned this into something ugly that has no place on the forum.Out of respect to john and frank I am going to keep this PG rated, but you need to get a handle on whatever it is in your life that caused you to react the way you did in this thread. You OF ALL PEOPLE should know that this forum is about having fun, learning, buying and selling.BUT,cutting someone off at the knees then kicking them has no place here. There was no rhyme or reason for you acting like that.I have never seen you get like that before and I can't believe Im seeing it now.I would like to see you apologize but I know the old saying "Want in one hand, crap in the other and see which one gets filled first",So I will say this....it would show incredible humility if you took a step back, took a deep breath and apologized.Reguardless of your accolades, you are still just a human, and we all have to live together.I have more to say,but I'll wait to see what your response is.....hopefully you will take my words to heart.

My personal flaws are my own, but it should be self evident that I dont cope well with indignant fools, the pompous or the self-righteous.

No, nothing to apologise for and I'd hardly call this ugly. Set aside your personal bias against me and read again what I wrote.. see the selective answering, the shifting discussion, the chest puffing.. anything but acknowledging that what I say has any merit.

btw, nice selective editing there. Kill the context.

You say you have more to say.. spare us. This is rather tiresome.

Mods, might be an idea to thread lock.

This is also a good idea, possibly also very efficient. You can also go the other way and use a 12V step up converter. This would allow the use of a single 12V battery and negate the poor voltage discharge profile ( lead acids have relatively high IR - internal resistance ).

I have used these in the past for another application:

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=6106766&x=0&y=0

Enough voltage selections there for almost anything. Enough power for my laptop. hmm.. might make a good eco system.

Small lead acids are cheap as well. I can see this simple setup costing no more than $100-$200 including charger, decent battery ( no you dont need a deep discharge type battery for resonable performance) and connectors.

The snag here is care. You have to care for the battery otherwise it will let you down. Lots of info everywhere on that.

At least you can admit that you have some problems. But you have not figured out how to keep them to yourself.

Well that certainly explains why you are so pissed off.You haven't figured out how to cope with yourself, for you are clearly all 3 of those.

You assume that I am bias because I am against what you wrote towards other members? That is quite an inflated ego you have there. You may want to consider getting a prescription to rectify that problem.

This isn't the first time you have stated that comment in this thread. You really are as stupid as you sound. It's amazing how someone that (supposedly) is so educated, can be so stupid.First off it's not selective "editing",there was nothing edited about it.No one on this forum deleted anything that you wrote,we merely copied and pasted the parts of your ramblings that we were commenting on,so that you,and others, knew what the comment was a response to.It's the exact same thing that you did in your last post.Have we had our alzheimers pill today? Rolling Eyes

This is advice you should have taken before you started throwing mud at other members. As stated in my earlier post, you had no right to act like an 11 year old towards them, unless of course you are in fact 11 years old, which would explain an aweful lot.

Kind of ironic isn't it?You wanted someone to lock this thread not even 10 minutes after you posted your dribble. However I agree it may be in your best interest to have this thread locked before you accidently make a comment that makes sense.Or worse.....before you realize you were in the wrong and apologize. But you have proven that you are not smart enough to go back and see that you were wrong.
Before this goes any further,I agree that this needs to be locked. There is obviously only one way to stop your idiocracy, and that is if a mod locks this thread.Of course you'll still be stupid, you'll just have to find another thread to spread it on.Seriously, where are the men in the white coats, don't they know you are gone? icon_2gun

Nice selective editing there as well. What we have here readers, is the troll in action. Totally off-topic and a pretty poor attempt to goad me. Wink Interesting to see your double standards as well. Do as you say and not as you do huh?

Now I am going to give your post the due attention it deserves....
