I just purchased and will receive tomorrow an HP desktop computer with a Core I5-750 CPU. Today, HP announced the same series computer with the I5-2500S CPU for about $75 more. Is it worth it for me to send back the 750 and get a 2500S (I have 30 days to return) ? Primary use is Photoshop Element, Picassa and general photo/video editing--no gaming. The desktop I bought will have a dedicated video board so I don't care about on chip video. I'm not so sure the 2500S is that much better and I will also be dealing with new motherboard architecture and the bugs that accompany that.

Thanks for any input.

There are a few reasons why you may want to get the i5-2500S processor:
  • Better performance due to micro-architecture improvements, and due to higher Turbo Boost frequency.
  • Lower power consumption. You may eventually save those $75 on electric bills (if you're not going to turn off your computer for three years Smile)
  • AVX 256-bit extensions to SSE. When support for these instructions is added to photo/video editing software you may see considerable performance boost.
  • Upgradeability. If you plan to upgrade the computer in the future then it's better to get the i5-2500S, as the socket 1156 is pretty much obsolete, and upgrade options from the i5-750 processor are very limited.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply. Seems like it's worth the hassle of returning and reordering.
