GIGABYTE 8S655FX-L
1GIG 400 RAM DUAL CHAN
P4 3GHZ 800FSB 1M CACHE (problem)
P4 2.6GHZ 800FSB 512 CACHE (no problem)
WINDOWS XP HOMW SP2
6800 GT
120 SATA
400W PSU
Hi can anyone help me, I have just purchased a new cpu (P4 3ghz 800fsb 1m 478) as an upgrade, took out old cpu aplied paste made sure it was seated corectly ect, but with the new cpu installed my pc wont boot, no beeps just a blank screen, re-insert old cpu and it boots fine, the strange thing is the first time I started my pc with the new cpu in, my pc booted to the "detecting ide drive screen" it also recognised the cpu as it was showing the correct speed and make of the chip, but it hung at the "detecting ide drives" screen, so i rebooted and now I get nothing not even a beep just fans spinning and some hd noise.
I have updated bios drivers ect: and made sure that my mb is compatable with this chip, but to no avail, the chip is brand new and looks fine so I dont think it is fried,
Please if anyone has any idea as to why I can't boot.
Thanks in advance. |

well, both revisions of your board support the chip, and you say youve updated the bios, so i doubt its a support issue
its likely not overheating, or if it is it should at least get partway through the post before locking up.
the fsb is the same so its not likel a clocking issue either
so, id say the chip is probably dead. take it back to the store you got it from and ask them to test it. |

i had the exact same problem with my new p4 3.0ghz 800mhz skt 478 cpu, it got to the same part of the post as yours did and after that everytime i restarted the screen was blank. so i reset the bios and reinserted the cpu, which allowed me to get in the bios. For some reason i fixed it by setting the ram speed on manual at 400 and the cpu on manual at 3ghz. if i put any of them on auto it does the same thing and hangs during post :S
hope that helps! |

| It could be that your motherboard doesn't support the prescott processor. |

| no, i checked gigabyte's site, every revision of his board supports that chip. he may need a bios update, but he said he already did that. |

Realy problematic part od Pentium 4 processors
That is next reason to prefer AMD processors
ok ok I will not write more because I will start discussion about Intel VS AMD
I have no idea to resolve this problem without only one - put back cpu to seller _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |
