From new chips choice for that price is very easy - only AMD. Phenom II x2 550 costs about 100$.
Intel's Core i3 starts from about 130$.
Do not look for GHz and cache capacity but at final performance in software what you need to use (games/archiving/decoding etc). _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Athlon II x4 is better than Phenom II X2 only in multi-threading tasks, when you can fully load three or 4 cores. For most daily applications Phenom II X2 will be faster.

For $130 you can get Phenom II X4 945. You should decide what is more important to you. If you need multithreading/multitasking which, if I'm not mistaken, is supported by 3Dmax, then get Athlon II X4 or Phenom II X4. With Core i3 you will get lower performance in multithreaded apps, but better performance in single and dual-threaded apps, including many games.
