Very interesting!
I read the thread, he send the CPU back to Intel and got a replacement CPU from them. Now Intel has back their ES CPU, they should be able to track where it came from.
Apparently it is more illegal to own/trade/sell an Intel ES CPU than i thought.

Yes, interesting thread.
Just want to know whether pre-P4 ES chips is affected? I mean that do I have to return the ES chip upon request of Intel if Í own a PII or even 486 ES). If Intel own the title permanantly, it mean I can't sell the ES chip in any way. Is it right?

I noticed there are not as many modern ES processors on eBay in the last few months as before. I guess this explains it...

It depends on under what conditions Intel gives aways these processors. If the recipients of engineering samples sign NDA or other document that explicitely prohibits selling/trading/giving away the ES chips then it's illegal for us to own them (samples). One of the posts on HardOCP forum says that many people don't sign anything, that is they receive engineering samples as free samples - in this case you can do whatever you want with the processor. Of course, one post is not a proof...

So this is the reason why we don't see any iAPX-432 chips around. Intel probably ordered all chips back from the development teams and destroyed them when they discovered the concept was a big failure. I think all chips made was samples. Sad |

Well, Intel usually do not recover old ES. I have many of them, all recent.
I think the main problem for Intel is not all ES, it's only some ES. Some Engineering Sample CPU have features enabled and can be used by AMD for reverse-engineering. For exemple, I have some ES with VT enabled right now. Could be helpfull for reverse engineering. _________________ ES-Only Collector : http://www.engineering-sample.com

They would have had to flown all the way to Korea and force the chip from my fingers Heck, if they kept being hounding me I might of even threatened to sale it to AMD but I definately wouldn't have given it back as now that chip is extremely rare!!! Anybody got one for trade

The_Mad,
I am from Intel and I would like you to send me your entire Intel ES collection because I said so. Please be sure to pack them well and feel free to include some of your other ES chips as well.
Thank you!
