|
|
Hello,
We happen to have an old Compaq Presario 5528 All-in-one that we are wanting to use for our Preschooler, but a lot of the software we want to get needs a faster CPU than it has.
It has a 75 MHz Intel A80502-75, SX998 CPU, and I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade this at all with any current chips, or if it is possible to find any older chips still that would be compatible. I need to get up to at least 233 MHz for some of the software we want to run.
Thank you for any assistance,
Kevin Allen |

hello
i'm sorry but i've got bad news for you... your chances of upgrading that computer with a recent chip are very remote (bios compatibility issue + voltage and multiplier limitations) .you might be able to install a pentium 133MHz, but i don't think you can put any faster cpus :'( |

I Agree with LKG01A and I think in these Compaq were Sockets 5 so max will be 133 MHz. If there is Socket 7 you can propably plug max CPU 200 or 233 MHz MMX.
Good luck in upgrading old PCs _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

Thanks for the sobering news - I actually didn't have much hope that it would be possible.
Regarding the issue of Socket 5 vs. Socket 7 - how would I find that out?
Also, if it is Socket 7, where would I be able to get a CPU 200 or 233 MHz MMX?
Thanks again,
Kevin |

| well to find out what socket your motherboard has, you will have to open your PC case and find the cpu (you should find a heatsink with a fan on top) under all that is your motherboard cpu's socket it will be marked "SOCKET 5" or "SOCKET 7". To get a another cpu, i would sugest you ask for one in the "For Sale/Trade" section of the forum... |

| and i seriously doubt a pentium MMX is compatible with your compaq computer (MMX cpus require dual voltage and old motherboards do not have dual voltage) |

Thanks for all the feedback - I wanted to make sure I understand, though.
I did check, and it does say Socket 7 - I also looked up Socket 7 on this site and there is a list of compatible processors - is there any reason that any of the listed processors would not be compatible in my situation?
Your help is very much appreciated,
Kevin |
