|
|
Hi,
First would like to say I'm newbie so please indulge if my ignorance leads the way.
I have a 'Biostar MCP6P AM2+ ver: 6.2' motherboard. I'd like to fit an 'AMD Phenom II X6 1065T' CPU into the board, if I can.
From what I've read it seems the board's max. wattage for CPU's is 95 watt, and the proposed CPU is rated as 95 watt - so I assume it is okay on that front.
However, the board has an AM2+ socket and the CPU is said to be intended for an AM3 socket - therefore, will this CPU fit into the socket my board has?
Lastly, are there any other issues I should be considering that I might not be aware of, given my 'newbie' status? I think I mean that in a pretty wide-ranging sense, not just specific to just changing the CPU. Like, for example, if I do replace the CPU does that mean my WinXP will no longer consider my machine to be licenced? Or, do I have to try and do anything about the BIOS that is currently on the machine? (Any other issue at all that a newbie might stumble over.)
P.S. I did read the sticky and tried to follow the link given there to Biostar information. However, the link just gets redirected to a Biostar 'general webpage' which I think wasn't the original intention of the sticky link. For my own motherboard this is the appropriate page. However, the CPU I'm asking about isn't listed there and for all I know, even it is suitable, might never be listed if Biostar is less than diligent. _________________ World Community Grid |

Different socket is not a problem. The problem is that the Phenom II 1065T has different stepping from Phenom II X2/X3/X4 processors, and it doesn't seem to be supported by the board. I wouldn't recommend to buy it unless you can confirm for sure that the CPU is supported. The CPU will likely run in the board, but at 800 MHz, and you won't be able to increase the frequency.

Many thanks for the quick response. On that basis I emailed Biostar support and got following in reply:
| Quote: | | Yes, this motherboard supports AM3 CPUs up to 95 watts (AM3 CPU will fit in AM2+ socket). However, AMD 6-core CPUs are not compatible on MCP6P M2+ motherboard. The BIOS will not recognize the processor. |
Ah, well. Guess I'm looking at Phenom II X4 x955 (or around that park). Even at that though I'll see fair improvement.
Thanks again. _________________ World Community Grid |
