Hello,

Can the AMD V160 upgrade path include Turion II N570 or Phenom II N970?

What other CPU's can replace the V160?

I've got a Dell M5030.

Thanks,
Pete

Yes, it can. They have somewhat higher 35Watt Thermal Design Power, but should run fine in many laptops. They will run hotter, and you'll have shorter battery life.

Thanks Gennadiy,

That's a detailed list to choose from.

After a fruitless long crawl through the web it's nice to see a comprehensive list of CPU's.

Looking at the increase from 25 watts to 35 watts, will there be any issues with the increased wattage besides heat?

I can live with the reduced battery life as the laptop is on A/C supply for 99% of the time.

I don't think there will be any additional issues. If you're concerned about it then consider upgrading to Pxxx processors - those have the same TDP as your V160.

Again, many thanks for the intel Gennadiy,

I've noted using the compare utility on "CPU World" that there is a difference between some of the higher level CPU's listed & the V160 regarding the bus speed with the V160 listed as 1600Mhz & the others at 1800Mhz.
Is it reasonable to run the 1800Mhz CPU's on a 1600Mhz board or is the lesser mobo speed going to hold back the higher end cpu's and negate their usefulness?

Is it a better idea to get a better CPU but keep to the same bus speed?

The limitation is in the CPU, not in the board. Which means, if you use CPU with 1.8 GHz bus speed (it's actually HyperTransport speed), the board will support it.
