Hi, Tuesday July 19, 2011
I'm new & don't know much. Simple question proving difficult to answer.
I'm starting to run some big programs that are slowing the PC down. I have an ASUS M2N motherboard and want to upgrade the present CPU (an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+). What's the best CPU I can put in or even the top 5?
CPU-World's "Specifications" for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ says it, "is the fastest dual-core processor for socket AM2." But that post could be several years old and the ASUS web site (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2N/#CPUS) lists several other Athlon CPUs. With all the different codes it's very confusing. FYI: the M2N has the newest BIOS upgrade.
Additionally, the ASUS board can take Opteron and Sempron CPUs.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, DDBob.

What is the question ? If "What's the best CPU I can put in or even the top 5?" Then answer is Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (CZ),2MB,rev.F3,125W,SocketAM2.

It's still the fastest Athlon 64 X2 socket AM2 processor. AMD released Athlon X2 and Phenom chips since then, but those are socket AM2+, and they are not on the ASUS M2N CPU support list.

Thanks!
Just got back from a 2 day job & to find your answers. That fast was fantastic. Now to get the chip and an extra large heat sink. I'd asked ASUS tech support the same question and got this answer from TS Jack; "due to that there are so many different CPU to choose, I suggest you to choose one yourself."
Take care, U guys are great, DDBob. Very Happy
