Hi

Iam looking to upgrade the cpu in my laptop

The Laptop Is a Dell Studio 1558 with the above cpu 8GB 1333 memory and a 500GB 7,200rpm hdd etc etc

It will be a year old next month.

It currently has an Intel I7 720QM 1.6GHZ turbo 2.8GHZ 6MB Cache

What upgrade cpu's are out there that fit this :-

BY80607002907AH
Package 988-pin micro-FCPGA8 (rPGA988A)
Socket Socket G1 (rPGA988A)

Iam aware of the difficulties with upgrading notebook/laptops i have several years experiance in cut fingers and broken plastic tabs etc to name a few

All help greatly appreciated

Jamie

The Core i7 840QM (1.87GHz, Turbo 3.2GHz, 8MB cache) is the fastest Socket G1 CPU with the same 45W TDP as the CPU you have now.

The 920XM (2Ghz/3.2GHz) and 940XM (2.13GHz/3.33GHz) Core i7's will technically fit in your socket but may have compatability issues with your laptop's BIOS due to their unlocked multipliers. Also, they have 55W TDP and may produce too much heat for your laptop's cooling system.

Your safest upgrade is the Core i7 840QM, however it is not much of an upgrade over what you have (+270MHz base (17%), +400MHz turbo (14%). It may make a small difference, however the ~$250 price tag is probably better spent towards a new laptop later on. That part is up to you to decide though.

In addition to what rflynn88 said: I think i7-920XM and 940XM will work in your laptop, but the BIOS may not have overclocking options.
