Anyone seen a chip like this before? I'd like to know from what machine it was desoldered...I was told an IBM mainframe from '70.
And, secondly and more important, a question based on your experience...what is the best way to remove this heatsink without damaging the cpu? Heat gun, drill+self-cutting tapping screw, or...?
I'd like to see the die core under it... |

Hi there!
It's a P13 processor on multichip-module,
it was used in IBM 3181 mainframes!
Somewhere I saw an opened one so it is
possible but for sure not easy because of
glued ceramic I think. _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

Watch the slideshow on this site to
see how it looks inside!
http://www.cpu-galaxy.at/
It is soldered so maybe putting it
head over onto a hotplate could do it. _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

I believe that this chip came from an IBM 3081; as there is no
IBM 3181 mainframe.
Seems like I sold an IBM 3081 delivery position (and the mainframe with it
of course) for $1,200,000.00 in 1984 or there abouts. Times have changed for sure!!
Here is a link to picture a whole 3081 mainframe:

Enjoy the "heavy metal". |

Hello,
it's a nice IBM 4381 CPU MultiChip Module, Type P-13 (year introduced, 1984). This MCM has a exclusive heatsink design, patended by IBM in 1983 and called "impinged air-flow cooling".
See http://www.computerhistory.org/collections/accession/102645256.
The 3081 mainframe is instead based on the larger and more complex TCMs (Thermal Conduction Modules), like the whole 308x and 309x families.

I opened mine very easly, heathsink wasn't glued but soldered all around, I overturned it on a flame and after some seconds I removed the white cpu.
suggestions? use a pair of thermic gloves!! |
