Will Socket 7 processors work with Socket 5?
I recently came across an old dell P100c 100mhz... Then I came across a Intel 200mhz cpu which turns out to be socket 7... I put in the cpu and it worked, went into settings and it recognized it... The dell website said that the mobo on the dell would support up to 166mhz... I thought that intel made Socket 5 up to 100mhz... anyways I took out the processor.... just in case..
My question is will keep working or eventually blow up? |

I think processor not blow up. Different beetween Socket 5 and 7 is :
on Socket 5 we can mount CPUs with solid voltage and on Socket 7 CPUs with double voltage (VCore and I/O). So if in Dell manual write you can plug Pentium 166 that means you can do it but only with Pentium 166 without MMX. _________________ Visit ABC CPU - Virtual CPU Museum. |

The the MMX processor slides right into the Socket 5 slot... and it boots up just find... the thing i am wondering weather or not the mobo can handle it or vise a versa .... I would hate to smoke that chip

Socket 5 supplies much higher voltage than what's required for Pentium MMX processor. Core voltage for Pentium MMX is 2.8V, your board supplies 3.3 or 3.45 V. So, eventually your processor will burn. If you can lower the core voltage somehow to 3.1 or 3.2V this'll help to prolong the life of the chip.

| There are settings on the motherboard for 166mhz think that would help ? |

I can't help as it depends on the motherboard. Take a look at the board near the socket, maybe there are (hopefully marked) jumpers that will allow you to change the voltage.
