|
|
Hi all,
I have a damaged IBM 4341 cpu. I want to know what under the gold heatspreader so I decided to put it on the fire (my home Gas device) for over 20 minutes. I guessed the gold heatspreader will melt down but it didn't. After heating it for over 20 minutes, the pin nearly melted down but the gold heatspreader was still there .
So I finally used the hammer to open it. Woo too beautiful cpu. |

Not for the scale. I used it to open the cpu.
BTW, will the gold heatspreader are all pure gold? I have such thinking because after put it on fire over 20 mins, it didn't change its color and shape. |

If the heatspreader was all gold the value would be so high that collectors would never be able to afford them, as I'm sure a lot of gold refiners would know about that much gold. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

interesting thing is that the heat-spreader doesn't seem to be in contact with the dies
so it seems it is only to protect the dies _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Put a magnet next to the gold heat spreader and see what happens.
Pure gold is not magnetic. |

Just put a magnet next to the gold heatspreader.
The gold heatspreader is magnetic so it is not pure gold.
Thanks Glory_Cloud teach me this easy method for testing. |

Hi,
very nice. Chips inside are bipolar (ECL) logic, up to 704 gates each. |

Yes, i'm lucky to only "remove" the pin but not the lid/die.
Here is the close-up of the lid/die. |

die = chip/silicon
lid = metal cover/the golden piece you removed.
... but yes, it could happen the die gets removed too.
Happened to me with the first C4002-2 I opened with a heat gun. When the metal lid was removed after ten minutes of maximum heat the die was slipped in a corner.
I think the best method of removing a lid is both heat and mechanical help, the heat is often sufficient to melt the solder but the lid does not slip away. Then a needle can do a good job. |

Thanks for your info.
My next target is this IBM cpu.
I don't know whether it's good to use the fire (my home gas device) to detach the lid.
Is there any suggestion if no heat gun is available to use. |

Better buy a heatgun. There are big blue cores under that lid if I good remember. A friend of me have removed the lid a years ago. |

Thanks for your advice.
Will consider to buy a heatgun to safely remove the lid. |
