Hey All,

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 system with a Pentium III 933mhz processor. I was wondering if I could just drop in this processor to replace my older one. Or will it not work?

I have no experience with this type of upgrade (to tell you the truth, I use Macs...lol!) But I need a little speed boost.

Will I have to do a BIOS upgrade or anything else to get this processor in?

If this one wont work, what is the fastest processor I can get into this motherboard?

Thanks so much!

Your Dell motherboard does not have direct support for Tualatin processors, so if you want to upgrade to Pentium III 1133 you'll need to flash Intel BIOS and use Powerleap (or similar) Tualatin adapter. You don't need an adapter if you use faster Pentium III Coppermine processor, but you'll need to update to the latest Dell BIOS. Pentium III Coppermine 1100 MHz will probably work, 1000 MHz will work for sure.

If I use the latest BIOS from the Dell website, do you know if that will let me use the 1133 processor? If not, it an upgrade from 933 to 1100 (or 1000) worth it?

No, even with the latest Dell BIOS you won't be able to use it.

It's not worth it to upgrade to 1 GHz processor. Upgrading to 1.1 GHz will make your computer faster by 10 - 15%. The 1.1 GHz processor will cost $40 - $60. Is it worth it or not you'll need to decide for yourself.

Ok then, could you explain a bit more about flashing the Intel BIOS? Where do I get this BIOS? Will it work with my DELL motherboard? How do I flash it?

I'm sorry, but like I said, i've never done anything like this.

Take a look at this thread:

http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_upghw&message.id=35490

It has a link to Intel BIOS file and to flashing instructions. A link to powerleap adapter is broken - here is a good link to it:
