This chip didn't sell on ebay, but I am interested if anyone has any idea of its use.

seemly about 100 x 100mm square and has an unusual pin arrangement on the bottom

It is just a blank, right? No die attached...and pads go right to edge (without pins). Some custom part??

I honestly have no idea... but similar to some test assemblies
but all I have seen have been LGA not PGA

If the quadratic area in the middle of the top
is the pad-matrix for the chipdie I would say
its an unfinished gate array chip...
Strange (finished) stuff like this can sometimes be
found in supercomputers and other special
high-end computers. A real pity that there is no
hint on the chip who the manufacturer is.

Stu, you forgot to mention that the chip weights 0.8 lb. That's like 4 Pentium Pros.

i dont have the listing bookmarked anymore.. but sounded right

I did have a try at this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300612321694?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649#ht_1620wt_832

I'm guessing it was an unfinished MCM.. no dies or pins
