i bought some custom marked (HEPC4801L) 40-pin Motos dated week 01 1977 guessing they were 6800s

I finally got around to lifting the lid on one and checking the die markings
The die was marked MC6800

My question is anyone familiar with the part numbering and aware of what they were intended for?

The only other similar parts are HEPC4821L which I presume are 6820s

In the 60s and 70s, Motorola developed a "HEP" series of parts for "Hobbyists, Experimenters, and ???" = HEP. Perhaps this is one of those parts, with the additional "C" indicating either "Circuit" or "Custom", but I'm just guessing here.

You need to remove the "[/code]" from the end of that link. It doesn't work as expected with it Smile

It seems like "HEP" are replacement parts from Motorola, similar to NTE, ECG and other replacement parts. Motorola published cross-reference guide for them:

I didn't think of it... I expected more competition from electronics hobbyists, as the guide should be useful for them.

As a followup: Cross-reference guide, published in 1977, doesn't include information on HEPC4801L.

Thanks for the information, I would not have expected an 6800 behind that markings.
