It may or may not work. Find out make and model of your motherboard, and then search for CPU support list for your motherboard.

It states that my motherboard supports Athlon 64 X2 CPU's (what im going to get). Im just wondering if an 89W CPU will work on the 95W motherboard? It should work right? the CPU is only drawing less power right?

thanks

It is not based in TDP. Newer CPUs has been made in lower process what means they are new generation CPUs. Those are supported by new BIOS or new socket. Without motherboard and CPU model name we cann't guarantee anything.

So you folks are unsure about the wattage of the CPU being underpowered? My motherboard is a Foxconn RS780 by the way

The 95W is an upper limitation of the board. It is NOT a lower limit. You can very successfully run your 6000+ unit as long as it isn't this one:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD-Athlon%2064%20X2%206000%2B%20-%20ADX6000IAA6CZ%20(ADX6000CZBOX).html

The differences in appearance between different editions or 'steppings' of a particular CPU are slight and all markings should be checked carefully. To be sure you might need to post more info about the board you have as RS780 is an old designation for an AMD northbridge. There must be other markings on the board pertaining to Foxconn.

If you meant A7GM-S, then details are available on the Foxconn website.

Processor support includes:
AMD Phenom™II, Phenom™ FX, Phenom™, Athlon™ 64FX, Athlon™ 64x2, Athlon™ 64, Sempron™ processors, Socket AM3 and AM2+

As the board is also listed as an AM2/AM2+ board it makes sense that it takes AM2 processors (plus some of the supported processors are only available as AM2 and not as AM2+). There is no mention of max/min TDP, in the product specs or manual.

As long as you are unsure about compatability, I would make sure the board has the latest BIOS (version 799F1P15), as it supports all the latest CPUs (up to July 2010), so you should have no problems.

You might well run HWinfo, from below:

http://www.hwinfo.com/

It comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, both of which are freeware. I have run this app on multiple machines in order to determine just what is in each. The Summary panel will show you the info we here at this board have requested.

TIA
