The 5394 may operate in one of two different modes: 5394 native mode or 5294 emulation mode, which provides function equivalent to that provided by the 5294, with the exception of the Extended Cluster and DDSA features.
File transfer via IBM Enhanced 5250 Emulation Program or IBM System/36/38 Workstation Emulation Program is supported when the 5394 (in 5294 emulation mode only) is attached to a System/36 or System/38. File transfer via AS/400 PC Support is supported when the 5394 (in native mode only) is attached to an AS/400. No change to the 5394 is required to convert from 5294 emulation mode to 5394 native mode except for simple reconfiguration at the time of conversion, which is performed by the customer.
All models have three ports and the same cabling restrictions applicable to the 5294 apply to the 5394 (see the "IBM 5394 Introduction and Installation Planning Guide" (SK2T-0316) for additional information). The maximum supported devices (4) may be attached across the three ports in any combination.
Maximum cable lengths supported are as follows:
From 5394 to last workstation using cable-thru = 5000 ft. (1525m)
From 5394 to workstation using twinax from 5394 to 5299 and TTP from 5299 to workstation = 2000 ft. (608m)
From 5394 to workstation using TTP from 5394 to 5299 and TTP from 5299 to workstation = 1000 ft. (304m)
One display station should be located within 20 ft (6m) of the 5394 Remote Control Unit for ease in customer set up and problem determination.
Connectivity to the ROLM CBX 8000, CBX 9000, and IBM CBX 9751 through a ROLM DataCom Module (DCM) is supported for SDLC connections. Connectivity to the IBM Token-Ring Network is not supported.
NOTE: When ordering this controller a Communication cable must be specified: V.24 or V.35. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." A.E. |
