Let me preface this by saying I'm not a stranger to computers. At this point I just don't have enough information to comfortably continue.
My laptop is a refurbished HP Pavilion-4153cl w/ 4GB of DDR3. I've had it for 8 months now. It looks great but has some serious performance and overheating issues. Its parts are not all stock, it being refurbished. The changes from stock(that I know of): instead of an HP hard drive it has a TOSHIBA MK6465GSX 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s. I am not sure yet of any other changes. I run Windows 7. Currently my Drive is getting the Smart 301 Hard drive imminent failure error, so i need to replace the hard drive, I'm going to probably go with a Seagate Momentus ST906403N1A1AS-RK 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5"[/color]. After checking all possible reasons for the drive to fail I've discovered it is overheating. a few weeks ago it was running fairly hot, in C,(the drive around 50, the max temp for that part is i think 47, the core was around 65) all of a sudden all of my icons disappeared and I was getting messages saying the drive had failed, anyway system restore, been keeping it below 42 ever since and i got my stuff back and its been working fine aside from the comp being rather glitchy. I thought that if I'm going to replace the Hard drive, i might as well upgrade the cooling system and performance so as to not have the hard drive fail again, or in case the cpu's lifespan has been greatly reduced, i might as well start fairly fresh.
Here's precisely what I'm upgrading:
1)Thermal Compound- Im going to replace the factory stuff with IC Diamond 24 Carat Compound. Please don't comment on what I should get instead, this is one area I did some good homework on, and this product tested extremely well.
2)Processor- The current processor is an AMD Turion II P540 2.4GHz. This is where I have some problems. This motherboard is unique as it has a Socket S1g4, the 4th generation of the S1 socket. While the previous sockets are physically similar, they are electrically different. So not many processors will be compatible. The one I'm hoping to get is an AMD Phenom II Dual Core Mobile X640 3.2GHz Black Edition. Currently I have had no luck finding this processor, and as such I will repost this part in the want to buy section of the forums, but if any of you know then please feel free to include that information here. BTW, the StarMicro one is probably a fake as the OEM # and Model Number don't match up, the photo is wrong, and it seems way to cheap at 65 to be so hard to find. I don't see why this would not be compatible, while it is 45W compared to the 25W of the Turion II, I will be hoping to offset it with the cooling upgrades.
3)Heatsink- This is where I really need help. Because I will be buying the processor OEM, I will need to find a compatible heatsink. And not only one that is compatible, but one that is fairly quiet(not very important just if possible), and tests very well with temperature removal. I was attempting to find one on Xoxide.com but the AMD socket categories it gave me were: A, 462, 754, 939, AM2, AM2+, and AM3. Are any of these similar enough to an S1 to be compatible? also, Why cant i find socket S1 heatsinks anywhere?
4)Cooling Pad- Cliche but they work. Im getting my dad's that he just replaced the fans in, its fairly quiet and gets the job done, usb powered and all.
5)Hard Drive- info in the laptop summary.
6)Fans- Once the laptop is open and the other parts are placed, then I will built the fan system around it.
7)Spring Cleaning- It'll definitely help in some way to get all the dust out.
8)RAM?- not sure yet, may put in the full 8GB of RAM it currently has two 2GB sticks. I've heard that the difference between 4 and 8 is actually quite small, pretty expensive, and sometimes 4 is actually faster. Would definitely like some input on this.

IN CONCLUSION: Im not bad with computers. The laptop I used before this was a year 2000 Winbook Si that my older brother hadn't used in years. It had a 10GB HD (I have 8GB Flashdrives HAHA) and one 64MB stick of RAM. When i got a hold of it it had been several years since it was used, id say about 3. It ran Windows Millennium but it always started in Safe mode due to an Active X control issue, in other words, deteriorated operating system. I repartitioned the HD and got it running Windows XP and upgraded the Ram to two 256MB sticks, However, one failed so I was left with a 256 and the original 64MB, the system report said I was running off of 383 MB of RAM(wtf?). I got it running better than the family laptop, a 2006 HP. It worked for about 2 years then it had a battery issue and I don't want to spend 100$ on a 10 year old compatible battery, so I got a new laptop. Last year during my Senior year of highschool, my friend and I started a computer repair business, S&L Computers, LLC. He's been working with computers since he was 5 and his dad has his own computer repair business as well. He and I both have Aspergers (mild form of Autism) and while it didn't affect me too bad, his social skills were not the best, but he knows computers. He's been teaching me for a while, but I don't know much compared to him. I'm the guy that deals with customers mainly. The reason I give all this info is so that people commenting know what intelligence level to post at, I don't need laymens terms, but I will definitely need details and explanations. I've done my best to provide as much information as possible, but if more is needed then please say so in the comments. AND PLEASE DO! it took a while to type all this ha.

I don't think you can find something better, than your current fan/heatsink, that will fit in your laptop. There is no standard socket S1g4 heatsink, and their design varies from one notebook to another. Your current fan/heatsink may be able to handle 35 Watt CPUs, but it's impossible to tell for sure. Check the temperature of your P540 under high load, if it's not close to the max then your cooling solution may be good for 35W parts.

I got the cooling pad, and everythings lowered by about 5C, I assume the IC Diamond will take off at least 2-3 more. If I can get even 1 more out fro cleaning everything I should be good. If I do find a compatible heatsink than all the better. last time I checked the max for the P540 is 70C i believe. Under high load mine has hit 62, used to be 67 without the cooling pad. The max for my HD is 47C and the highest mine has hit is about 40

Arctic silver or similar high-quality thermal paste may help you shave a few more degrees off.

IC Diamond 24 carat is very high quality, Tested only 1 degree more than arctic silver, besides there is that whole thing about AMD not recommending specifically arctic silver compounds for their processors. Its probably just a marketing thing, but 1C extra is a small price to pay for playing it safe.
