I need some infos for a project: A history of RAM .. i've done some researches and i found this types (in order of development):

D.I.L. - D.I.P.
SIPP
SIMM - 30 pins
SIMM - 72 pins - EDO
BEDO
SD RAM
RD RAM
DDR
DDR2
DDR3

I want to know differences between DIL and DIP (if they are same type or not) , where can i find a BEDO ram picture, if ZIP RAM is kinda standard or some proprietary type and if generaly my list is correct...

Hi cedrik,

don't mix package styles and technologies!

DIL stands normally for Dual-In-Line
DIP is as far as I know the same: Dual-Inline-Package

DIL, DIP, SIPP, and also SIMM are package and module names
while EDO, SDRAM, DDR(x) are different RAM technologies or methods to access the RAM (the list is far from complete...).

i must order chronologically the ram types ..... so i gotta mix all characteristic ... i know packages are dip, sip, simm and dimm.. and io also know that sim are 30 pins and 72 (edo)....and dimm are sdram , ddr sd ram , ddr2 sd ram .... in some references i found DIL in others DIM ... i wanna know itf its the same thing ...

technologies are in order fpm -> edo -> bedo -> sd ram -> rd -> ddr ?

and i found some references about ZIP RAM.... its worth mentioning it? or was just a short "experiment" ?

You might want to mention that there where various special memory types developed for usage in graphics cards too.

there will be a special section with all kind of "special" types memories: cache, vram and other types...

Hi cedrik,

ZIP was just a package style. As far as I remember something like zig-zag inline package (similar to SIP, but with two interleaving rows at 150mil).

Do not forget the basic RAM technologies like Static RAM and dynamic RAM. In early computer years (around the 70th) there also have been used dynamic shift registers as RAM...

Hello,
here I see a mix of RAM technologies and packaging styles: it's a bit confusing.
ZIP = Zig-zag Inline Package. It's a kind of IC package relatively common for RAMs back in 80s and 90s.

BEDO stands for "Burst EDO (DRAM)". It's a more recent version of EDO designed for demanding applications that can process up to 4 memory addresses per cycle, and it's pipelined.

I still need a picture with BEDO (if looks different than EDO) and to know about DIL and DIP if are the same thing or not...
