I recently found my first fake Pentium Pro:

I haven't tried to remove coating yet.

one of the better recoat jobs I have seen done on a Pro Smile

most likely a SL22S or SL22U

the colour difference between top & bottom ceramic is the first sign I look for

I have an SL22V too! What are we looking at here that determines it's a fake?

and also the marking of characters are a bit different from the official ones.

these might show you the differences between the font on a real Pentium Pro & one that has been coated & remarked

All PPro 200 fakes which I have discovered here were 166 MHz models.

Seems to me like a bonus considering that 200MHz PPros are way easier to find than 166MHz PPros nowadays. Cool

Looks like the characters were actually stamped in pretty deep, and a bad black ink job, after the characters were moved to the right.

And the purple coating overlaps some of the gold around the black box up top where it doesn't on the real one.

Mine has the characters in the same position as the fake (as per the above pictures), but they look like the characters in the real pic, and the colors on top & bottom match. The character shift on mine must just be that way from the factory!...or a different factory I suppose.

Placement has little bearing.. there are examples of both real Pentiums & Pros with markings nearly off the chip or at angle

other thing that you can use to pick them.. especially in a scrap lot.. the die cap is painted a darker black.
Hard to pick on its own.. but in a group of real ones.. easy

There is one more way to spot fakes. My chip had bottom lid painted, and the lid surface doesn't look as smooth as genuine Pentium Pros. Even worse, whoever painted the lid, didn't clean the surface really well and you can see some dust particles trapped inside the paint:

Should be sticky for its content; this is practically a guide.

Good call!

I don't know if it can be done, but is it possible to take a suspected fake and put it in a working system, then check the rated specs/stampings against the actual specs the suspect chip is running, e.g. MHz?

I don't know much about these chips and what programs were available back in their day to monitor them and their specs, but if there was, then that should be able to pick out a fake pretty easy, unless internal specs can also be permanently altered some how! Assuming someone has access to a working system.

There is a purple C8008 on eBay right now the seller claims was re-stamped by a third party for Intel way back when, maybe these variations in colors and shades Could be the result of a similar situation, or a result of simply being manufactured at a different plant? I'm not trying to question anyone's knowledge or expertise about this, but these are just a few thoughts I had about the subject.

most fakes/remarks are chips that can overclocked or hacked to alter the multiplier.. so speed doesnt really help

official Intel remarking.. the old marking are normally lasered out and new ones are applied

the C8008s (actually C8008-1s) are likely excess custom or house marked units that some OEM had poorly remarked so they could sell them
Less likely they are units that didnt pass all test requirements that Intel sold on the side to small IC suppliers like godbout
